The Mother of God of Vladimir Icon
The icon of the Blessed Mother of Vladimir, written by Ewa Krepsztul using the traditional egg tempera method, is a stunning portrayal of the Virgin Mary tenderly holding the Christ Child. Their faces touch in a display of profound intimacy and love, with Mary’s expression reflecting deep serenity and gentleness. The Christ Child gazes affectionately at her, emphasizing their unbreakable bond.
Historically, this icon has been one of the most revered in Eastern Orthodox Christianity. Originally created in Constantinople in the early 12th century, it was brought to Russia, where it became a powerful symbol of divine protection, credited with safeguarding cities like Vladimir and Moscow from invaders. The beauty of this icon lies in its exquisite artistry and the deep emotional connection it evokes between Mary and Jesus, symbolizing the love and compassion of the Blessed Mother for all humanity.
It is created on a Linden wood board, on which cloth was placed. This cloth is a memorial of St. Veronica’s veil which reflected the face of Jesus on the way to Calvary. The board was primed with twelve layers of gesso symbolizing the twelve Apostles. The icon was written using natural dry pigments mixed with white wine, water, and egg yolk and then refined with 24-carat gold, a symbol of the presence of God.
This icon can be an exceptional gift for those seeking solace, protection, or spiritual guidance. Its profound beauty and symbolism make it a cherished keepsake, offering comfort and a sense of divine presence to those who turn to the Blessed Mother in times of need.
