Christ Crucifixion Icon
The Crucifixion of Our Lord Jesus Christ icon written by Ewa Krepsztul.
This is an approximation icon based on the original Crucifixion icon from the second half of the 14th century. The close-up reveals a profound and poignant portrayal of Christ in His final moments. Christ is depicted in intense agony, with His eyes closed in suffering and blood streaming vividly from His side wound, emphasizing the depth of His sacrifice.
Rendered in incredibly beautiful colors using the Egg Tempera method, the icon features a background of true 24-karat gold, which adds a remarkable luminosity to the scene. The rich, luminous hues and intricate detailing are enhanced by the gold, creating a striking contrast with the vibrant reds and deep reds of Christ’s side wound. This craftsmanship underscores both the historical significance and the spiritual depth of the crucifixion, conveying Christ’s physical suffering and divine grace.
It is created on a Linden wood board, on which cloth was placed. This cloth is a memorial of St. Veronica’s veil which reflected the face of Jesus on the way to Calvary. The board was primed with twelve layers of gesso symbolizing the twelve Apostles. The icon was written using natural dry pigments mixed with white wine, water, and egg yolk and then refined with 24-carat gold, a symbol of the presence of God.
This icon can serve as a beautiful focal point for meditation and prayer, offering a deeply intimate connection with the passion of Christ and fostering a profound sense of closeness and reflection.
