Saint Raphael the Archangel Icon

Saint Archangel Raphael’s icon is a profound representation of divine healing and guidance, cherished in Christian traditions. Raphael, whose name means “God heals,” is depicted as a youthful, serene figure in vibrant robes of blue-green, white, and gold, reflecting his divine status and healing role. He holds a fish, referencing the healing story from the Book of Tobit and symbolizing guidance and protection.

The icon features symmetry, vibrant colors, and intricate symbolism, with Raphael’s calm expression highlighting his role as a mediator between the divine and human realms. Rooted in Byzantine Christian art, the icon embodies themes of healing, guidance, and divine presence. Inscriptions written in Greek.

It is created on a Linden wood board, on which cloth was placed.  This cloth is a memorial of St. Veronica’s veil which reflected the face of Jesus on the way to Calvary. The board was primed with twelve layers of gesso symbolizing the twelve Apostles. The icon was written using natural dry pigments mixed with white wine, water, and egg yolk and then refined with 24-carat gold, a symbol of the presence of God.
