Saint Francis Icon

The icon of Saint Francis of Assisi is an original work, created with deep reverence and care by Ewa Krepsztul.

This icon depicts Saint Francis of Assisi in a contemplative and prayerful presence, set against a deep crimson-red background that emphasizes the luminosity of his golden halo. The composition combines the simplicity of Franciscan spirituality with the sacred visual language of traditional iconography. Saint Francis is portrayed wearing his dark Franciscan habit, with the hood draped over his head and shoulders. His face is gentle and introspective, his gaze directed slightly to the side, conveying humility, attentiveness, and an interior stillness. The elongated facial features, delicate modeling of light, and restrained expression invite the viewer beyond the outward image and toward the saint’s spiritual life.

The deep red background evokes the burning love of God and the Passion of Christ, reflecting the profound union between Saint Francis and the Crucified Lord. Francis holds a simple golden book marked with a small cross, a visual reminder of his devotion to the Gospel and his desire to follow Christ. His other hand is raised gently before his chest, revealing the stigmata – the wounds of Christ impressed upon his body. These wounds express the profound intimacy of his union with the Crucified Lord. The rope belt, visible at his waist, recalls his vow of poverty and the simplicity of the Franciscan life.

What makes this icon particularly expressive is its balance between solemnity and tenderness. The dark garment creates a sense of quiet gravity, while the warm halo, softly illuminated face, and graceful gesture of the hand communicate compassion and spiritual openness.

This icon draws inspiration from the early Franciscan iconographic tradition, particularly the works associated with the Third Master of Anagni and related 13th-century Italian paintings of Saint Francis of Assisi.

It is created on a Linden wood board, on which a cloth was placed.  This cloth is a memorial of St. Veronica’s veil which reflected the face of Jesus on the way to Calvary. The board was primed with twelve layers of gesso symbolizing the twelve Apostles. The icon was written using natural dry pigments mixed with white wine, water, and egg yolk and then refined with 24-carat gold, a symbol of the presence of God.

This icon can be an exceptional gift for those seeking solace, protection, or spiritual guidance. Its profound beauty and symbolism make it a cherished keepsake, offering comfort and a sense of divine presence to those who turn to the Blessed Mother in times of need.

All eViaCordis icons are handwritten by Ewa Krepsztul, whose mission is to proclaim God’s beauty through works of art as His little paintbrush.
