Saint Augustine and Saint Monica Icon

The icon of Saint Augustine and Saint Monica is an original icon written by Ewa Krepsztul. Created using the Egg Tempera technique, presents a deeply moving portrayal of these two revered figures.

Saint Augustine, depicted with a contemplative and serene expression, holds a scroll inscribed in Latin that reads, “You have made us for yourself, and our heart is restless until it rests in You.” This inscription underscores the profound spiritual connection and teachings of Saint Augustine.

Saint Monica, his mother, is shown alongside him, reflecting her profound love and pivotal role in Augustine’s spiritual journey. Her constant prayers and unwavering faith were crucial to his conversion, illustrating the deep bond between mother and son. Monica’s devotion played a transformative role in Augustine’s life, capturing the profound impact of a mother’s love and spiritual support.

The use of Egg Tempera gives the icon a luminous and vibrant quality, with rich, detailed colors that highlight the depth and sanctity of the figures. The scroll in Saint Augustine’s hands symbolizes his contributions to Christian doctrine and his reflective spirituality. It is created on a Linden wood board, on which cloth was placed.  This cloth is a memorial of St. Veronica’s veil which reflected the face of Jesus on the way to Calvary. The board was primed with twelve layers of gesso symbolizing the twelve Apostles. The icon was written using natural dry pigments mixed with white wine, water, and egg yolk and then refined with 24-carat gold, a symbol of the presence of God.
