The Seven Sleepers of Ephesus Icon
Our Seven Sleepers of Ephesus icon is handwritten by Ewa Krepsztul with egg tempera technique and based on the original XIX century Russian icon.
The icon is a captivating representation of the Christian legend of the Seven Sleepers of Ephesus. This legend tells of seven young men who fell into a miraculous sleep in a cave to escape persecution and awoke centuries later to find the world transformed by Christianity.
In the icon, the sleepers are depicted in serene slumber, portrayed with gentle expressions and intricately detailed robes. Above them, God the Almighty Father is shown in a majestic, divine presence, often with an aura of radiant light that emphasizes His omnipotence and protective role.
The icon’s warm, deep colors blend with celestial elements, creating a vivid contrast between the divine figure and the peaceful sleepers. This combination underscores the themes of divine watchfulness and serene faith, reflecting both the profound historical significance and the sacredness of the scene.
It is created on a Linden wood board, on which a cloth was placed. This cloth is a memorial of St. Veronica’s veil which reflected the face of Jesus on the way to Calvary. The board was primed with twelve layers of gesso symbolizing the twelve Apostles. The icon was written using natural dry pigments mixed with white wine, water, and egg yolk and then refined with 24-carat gold, a symbol of the presence of God.
