Blessed Mother of Mercy Icon

Our Lady of the Gate of Dawn, known as the Blessed Mother of Mercy Icon, Matka Boska Ostrobramska, as rendered by Ewa Krepsztul using the egg tempera method, is a poignant and evocative portrayal of the Virgin Mary. The painting shows Mary with her hands crossed over her chest, as though she is preparing to hold and embrace us. This gesture symbolizes her welcoming and protective nature, inviting all who view the icon to bring their burdens to her, trusting that she will intercede on their behalf and present their needs to Christ.

Mary’s expression in the icon is both compassionate and serene, reflecting her role as a maternal figure who offers solace and support. The crossed hands emphasize her readiness to receive the concerns of the faithful, lifting them up to Christ, who is often depicted in the background or within the icon, reinforcing the connection between Mary and her divine son.

It is created on a Linden wood board, on which a cloth was placed.  This cloth is a memorial of St. Veronica’s veil which reflected the face of Jesus on the way to Calvary. The board was primed with twelve layers of gesso symbolizing the twelve Apostles. The icon was written using natural dry pigments mixed with white wine, water, and egg yolk.
